Steven Geusens first pursued his bachelor’s degree in history (2016-2019), followed by his master’s (2020), obtaining both at the VUB. Within the framework of these initial studies, a desire to specialize into group associations with a religious and philosophical background grew. Steven dedicated his first master’s thesis to Epicurean philosophy, which included an analysis on Epicurean perceptions of fear, and a comparison with Cyrenaic philosophy.
Continued interest in esoteric associations in history drove Steven to pursue an additional master’s degree in art sciences and archaeology at the VUB, which led to him obtaining his masters’ degree in this field (2022). His thesis was focussed on the Roman cult of Mithras and observed the cult from both a historic and archaeological perspective, with special attention to the variation of cult buildings and their sacred space. After completing his thesis, Steven visited a number of sites associated with the cult of Mithras, working in a collaborative effort to digitally reconstruct a Roman Mithraeum in 3D (2023-2024).
As of November 2024, Steven is affiliated with SSAB as a scientific collaborator, working on an FWO weave project proposal with Alexander Meert and Sara Fascione (Université de Liège). The position is funded through the Eutopia seed funding of the VUB research council.
Steven is very motivated to work on this project and remains deeply interested in all forms of religious, philosophical and esoteric association. He consequently sees the SSAB as a perfect environment to pursue his interests academically.
Besides his activities at the SSAB and the VUB, Steven enjoys drawing, printmaking, hiking and swimming.
